Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the academy, our courses, completion, fees, and life after graduation.

The Academy

Who we are, how we teach, and what an ECA diploma means.

ECA is a Helsinki-based culinary academy offering European-standard chef certifications delivered online. Our programs combine video instruction, practical kitchen assignments, and assessed internships, leading to diplomas recognised across the EU hospitality sector.

ECA is registered in Helsinki, Finland. All instruction is delivered online, so students can study from anywhere. Internships are arranged in partner kitchens across Europe.

Courses are led by working chefs and hospitality professionals with experience in Michelin-rated kitchens, hotel brigades, and private chef roles. Each program has a dedicated lead instructor and access to a mentor network for one-to-one guidance.

All instruction, assessments, and support are in English. Many of our graduates go on to work in English-speaking kitchens throughout the Nordics and beyond.

Programs & courses

What we teach, how long it takes, and which path fits you.

Three flagship certifications: Certified Chef (the core professional program), Certified Yacht Chef (private and yacht galley cooking), and Certified Longevity Chef (health-span focused, nutrition-led cuisine). Each leads to an ECA diploma and portfolio.

The Certified Chef program is designed to be completed in 3 months. Yacht and Longevity specialisations run roughly 3–4 months including internship. All programs are self-paced within a maximum enrolment window (see below).

No formal culinary training is required for the Certified Chef program. We recommend at least one year of work experience in any field — it builds the stamina and professional habits kitchen life demands. Specialised programs build on the core certification or equivalent experience.

Modules cover knife skills, stock and sauce fundamentals, protein cookery, pastry basics, menu design, allergen and food-safety management, plating, kitchen leadership, and cost control. Programs end with a final practical assessment and an assessed internship.

Yes. Every ECA certification requires a supervised internship in a working professional kitchen. ECA arranges placements through its partner network of restaurants, hotels, and yacht galley operators. Students already working in a kitchen may have their workplace approved for the assessment.

Yes. Most students study alongside a job. Content is on-demand and assignments are scheduled weekly, so you can learn at the times that suit you. Plan for roughly 8–10 hours of study per week.

Time, completion & deadlines

What happens if life gets in the way.

Yes. The target duration is 3 months for Certified Chef and 4 months for specialisations. You receive a recommended study schedule at enrolment, but the actual pace is flexible as long as you stay within the maximum enrolment window.

Each program can remain active for up to 12 months from your start date. Within that window you can pause and resume your progress as life requires.

Nothing bad happens automatically. You simply continue at your own pace within the 12-month enrolment window — your progress is saved and modules remain accessible. We'll send gentle reminders and check in if you go quiet, and your mentor is available to help you build a realistic catch-up plan.

If your enrolment expires before you complete, you can extend for a fee (currently €190 for a 6-month extension) or re-enrol in the unfinished modules at a reduced rate. Any modules you've already passed and paid for do not need to be repeated.

Yes. You can pause for up to 90 days total during your enrolment without affecting your window — ideal for illness, travel, or family commitments. Pauses longer than 90 days require an extension.

Failed modules can be retaken at no extra cost — most students pass on a second attempt with tutor feedback. The final practical assessment may be retaken twice; a third attempt involves a short remedial tutorial before reassessment.

Fees, payment & certificates

What it costs, how to pay, and what you walk away with.

Current tuition is listed on each program page. Fees include all instruction, assessments, mentor support, internship placement, and certification. There are no hidden exam or materials fees.

Yes. ECA offers monthly payment plans at checkout with no interest. You can also pay in full for a small discount. Programmes remain accessible until your final balance is settled; certificates are issued only once payment is complete.

You can request a full refund within 14 days of enrolment provided you haven't completed more than the first module. After that window, refunds are pro-rated for unused modules. See our Terms of Service for full detail.

Graduates receive an ECA diploma with a unique certificate number, the program title, your grade, and the issue date. Diplomas are verifiable online by employers.

ECA diplomas are recognised across EU hospitality employers and are frequently cited by Nordic kitchens hiring international chefs. We cannot guarantee employment, but our graduate outcomes and partner network are strong.

Support, access & inclusion

How we keep you moving and welcome everyone.

Every student has a lead instructor, a mentor for one-to-one guidance, access to the student platform with announcements and schedules, and a direct line to ECA support. Most queries are answered within one business day.

You need a standard home kitchen, basic knives, and a device to watch lessons and upload assignments. A shopping list for each module is provided, and we suggest budget-friendly alternatives for specialty equipment.

Lessons include captions and transcripts, and our platform is built to WCAG 2.1 AA. If you need additional accommodations — including extended assessment time — contact support and we'll arrange it.

Email study@europeanchefacademy.com for admissions and academic questions, or use the cooperation page for partnership enquiries. Registered students can also message their mentor directly through the platform.
